Scores of 5, 10 and 15 are the cutpoints for mild, moderate and severe anxiety. When screening for any anxiety disorder, the recommended cutpoint for further evaluation is 10 or greater — sensitivity 89%, specificity 82% in the original study.

Though designed for generalised anxiety disorder, the GAD-7 also performs moderately well for panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and PTSD — so a raised score points toward an anxiety disorder, not specifically to GAD.

It is a severity and screening measure, not a diagnosis. Confirm by clinical interview.
